1. Who we are
TrestleSuite and TrestleBoards are run by TrestleSuite, based in Norman, Oklahoma, USA (“we”, “us”). These terms are an agreement between you and us. By creating an account or using a board, you agree to them. If you use TrestleBoards for a school or company, you confirm you’re allowed to accept these terms for it.
2. The service
TrestleBoards is a shared online whiteboard. You can add notes, shapes, drawings, pictures, PDFs and Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint files; work on them with others in real time; and share or embed boards. TrestleSuite is a course-building platform for WordPress and LifterLMS that is still in development.
TrestleBoards is free during development. We may add, change or remove features, or introduce paid plans later. If we start charging for something you already use, we’ll tell you ahead of time, and you won’t be charged without agreeing first.
3. Accounts and guests
You need an account to create and own boards. You can sign up with email, or with Google or Microsoft. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. Keep your sign-in details private; you’re responsible for what happens under your account.
People you invite to a public board can join as guests without an account. A guest shows up as an anonymous animal name, like “Anonymous Otter”, or a name they type.
4. Your content
You keep ownership of everything you and your guests add to your boards: text, drawings, pictures and files. To run the service, you give us permission to store, copy, show and process that content only as needed to provide TrestleBoards to you and the people you share with. That includes making previews of files, saving versions, and creating the PDFs and spreadsheets you ask for. This permission ends when the content is deleted, apart from short-lived backup copies.
If you use TrestleBoards for a school, agency or company, the content belongs to you or your organization under your own policies; we don’t claim ownership of it. We don’t use board content to train AI models, and we don’t sell it.
Our templates, sample boards and example text belong to us. You may use and adapt them freely on your boards and in your own courses and sessions.
You’re responsible for the content you add. Only upload things you have the right to share, and give credit where it’s due.
5. Sharing and public links
Each board can be private, open to signed-in members, or open to anyone with the link. When a board is open to anyone with the link, anyone who has that link, or visits a page where the board is embedded, can see it and add to it. You can turn a link off or replace it with a new one at any time. Don’t put sensitive personal information on a public board.
6. Rules for using boards
Please don’t use TrestleBoards to:
- break the law, or help someone else break it;
- harass, bully, threaten or demean anyone, or post hateful content;
- post sexual content, or any content that sexualizes or endangers children;
- share other people’s private information without permission;
- upload material you don’t have the rights to, such as copied course content or someone else’s copyrighted work;
- upload viruses or harmful files, or files designed to trick people;
- send spam or advertise without permission;
- share music in a way its service’s terms don’t allow. Room music uses each service’s own player, and listeners use it under that service’s terms, such as the YouTube Terms of Service;
- try to get into boards or accounts that aren’t yours, overload the service, or get around its limits or safety tools.
7. Safety tools and removal
TrestleBoards has built-in safety tools. It hides common rude words. Board owners can add their own list of words so notes containing them are held for review. Anyone on a board can report a note. We may look at reported content, and we may hide or remove content, or suspend or close accounts, that break these terms or put others at risk. Where we can, we’ll tell you why.
8. Schools and LMS use
Teachers and schools can use TrestleBoards with students, including through an LMS such as Canvas, Moodle, Blackboard or D2L using LTI 1.3. When a school uses TrestleBoards, the school decides how students use it. The school is responsible for getting any permissions it needs, including from parents where the law requires. We use student information only to provide the service to the school. We never use it for advertising or sell it. The Privacy Policy explains this in more detail.
9. Government agencies and public records
Government agencies, public schools and other public bodies may be subject to public records laws, such as the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and state open records laws. Board content created by or for a public body may be a public record.
- The agency decides what is a record, how long it must be kept, and how to respond to requests. We don’t respond to records requests on an agency’s behalf; if we receive one, we’ll refer the requester to the agency.
- Boards keep saved versions for 30 days, and inactive free boards shared by link may be removed (see Keeping and deleting boards). If your records schedule requires longer, save the board as a PDF or its notes to Excel and keep that copy in your own records system.
- If an agency needs help preserving or exporting a board for a records request or legal hold, contact us and we’ll help where we can.
10. Health information (HIPAA)
TrestleBoards isn’t designed to store or share protected health information (PHI) under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and we don’t act as a HIPAA business associate. Please don’t put patient names, medical record details or any other PHI on a board. For healthcare training, use made-up or fully de-identified case examples.
11. Accuracy, advice and emergencies
- Board content is written by the people using the board. We don’t check it for accuracy, and it doesn’t reflect our views.
- Our templates, examples and website are general information for learning and planning. They aren’t legal, medical, financial, safety or other professional advice.
- TrestleBoards isn’t an emergency communication or alerting system. Don’t rely on it during a real emergency or for time-critical operations; use your official emergency channels.
12. Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to take part, including people who use assistive technology. Our Accessibility and inclusion page explains what works today, what we’re still improving, and how to get help.
13. Keeping and deleting boards
- You can delete any board you own at any time with the Delete board button. Deletion can’t be undone.
- Boards keep saved versions for 30 days so you can undo mistakes. Older versions are removed automatically.
- Files and pictures that are no longer on any page of a board are removed after 30 days.
- Free boards that are open to anyone with the link, and have had no activity for 30 days, may be deleted automatically.
- You can save any board as a PDF, or its notes to Excel, before clearing or deleting it. Please keep your own copy of anything important. TrestleBoards is not a backup service.
14. Limits and fair use
Free accounts can have up to 20 boards, each with up to 20 pages. Up to 100 people can use a board at once. To keep the service fast and safe for everyone, there are also limits on things like file size, how many boards can be created in an hour, and how often a guest can post. We may adjust these limits over time.
15. Our software and name
The TrestleSuite and TrestleBoards names, logos and software belong to us. These terms don’t give you any rights to them beyond using the service as intended. If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without owing you anything. Other product names on our pages, such as Canvas, Google, Microsoft, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, YouTube and Spotify, are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say what TrestleBoards works with. LTI® is a trademark of 1EdTech Consortium, Inc.
16. No warranty
TrestleBoards is in development and is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we make no promises that it will always be available, error-free or secure, or that content will never be lost. We don’t give any implied warranties, such as merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.
17. Limits on liability
To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for lost data, profits or goodwill. Our total liability for any claim about the service is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US $50. Some places don’t allow these limits, so they may not all apply to you.
If your use of TrestleBoards, or content you add, leads to a claim against us, you agree to cover our reasonable costs of dealing with it, to the extent the law allows.
18. Ending use
You can stop using TrestleBoards and delete your boards whenever you like. To close your account, email us. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. If we ever shut down TrestleBoards, we’ll give reasonable notice where we can so you can save your boards.
19. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Oklahoma, USA, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts in Cleveland County, Oklahoma, unless the law where you live gives you the right to go to court there.
20. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as TrestleSuite grows. If a change is significant, we’ll let account holders know by email or on the site before it takes effect. Continuing to use TrestleBoards after a change means you accept the new terms.
